Testimonials

Young Person, Age 17

I’ve taken my time to respond to your last email as I felt a lot of emotions ending our sessions and every time I’ve gone to write this email it just stirs them all up. However I believe you deserve a lot more than silence.

I want to firstly say thank you. Thank you for your patience thank you for your acceptance thank you for your kindness, intelligence and amazing quotes. As you know this isn’t my first time having a mentor I’ve gone through this a lot, the opening up to someone, trusting them and then leaving them it’s a process and one I’m grateful to share with you. Although this ain’t my first rodeo you have definitely been memorable, you have this power to make people feel strong it’s as if all the things you’ve been through has given you this strength it’s as if you’ve gifted it to me and you’ve made me believe that I’m strong another to do it on my own. When mr rice left I felt very lost, scared, fragile and abandoned and my teenage angst made me believe no one would understand me I mean mine and mr rice relationship is pretty non existent now and I just really don’t want to go through that again and I thought ending our sessions would have the same dooming affect that’s why I detached myself before our last session (I mean I don’t really need to tell you that, you get it) but in the last weeks I’ve realised my power and strength and that no matter how hard the struggle is I will get through it if that’s uni or my family or Elliot and without you I don’t think I would’ve unlocked this energy.

I never wanted to hate you or push my abandonment issues onto our professional relationship like I have done with my mentors before and honestly I’m surprised I  haven’t and I only have you to thank for that, for I don’t know training my mind over the past year and I guess doing your job really well.

Lastly I just want to tell you how incredible you are. Honestly Elstree has a lot of kids with a lot of problems and being one of them sometimes you can feel like a handful but you never made our time feel like that, you made me feel worth your time and like I wasn’t crazy. Your stories are amazing I mean I’m sure in 5 years time I’ll still be remembering one of them and going ohhhh that’s what he meant or see myself in the same circumstances and think what would Ashley say. The work your doing is a thankless job not a lot of people would take the skills you have and do the work you do and your really changing peoples lives. I know you don’t need to hear it from me but you should be really proud, you inspire me.

Milan Johnston Sports Partnership Officer

We have been working in partnership with Forever young people over the past six months on various projects that support young people with both their physical and mental wellbeing. Ashley and the team have delivered two HAPpy camps over the Easter and summer holidays, to support disadvantaged young people in the borough, with the aim of tackling holiday hunger, physical inactivity and social isolation. Through these programmes they have been able to provide new experiences through sport and physical activity and improve confidence, which has a lasting impact and is evident when they return after attending the Easter camps.

A successful Youth Hub was established and is delivered by FYP, working within one of our deprived active local areas to try and reduce social exclusion, steer young people away from anti-social behaviour and provide a safe space and support network. The team have been able to build positive relationships and trust with these young people. The hub has been really flexible in terms of what they deliver and the team have been great at offering a variety of multi-sport sessions. A mentoring football project is another example of the great work by FYP. During the summer holidays we were able to support with funds to deliver this project. The overall aim was to engage with ages 14+ through football, where they could make friends and develop social skills. There was then the support unit from the team where they were able to mentor the young people around topics including anxiety, stress, anger etc.

Ashley and the team are very reliable and enthusiastic, they’re always looking to get involved where possible, and have great determination to engage with the community. The team are very knowledgeable and have a great energy about them.
